The anticipation has been building as the team has been preparing over the past months in the lead up to the tournament, a first for any women’s team from the Cook Islands.
This momentous occasion follows Avatiu’s triumphant win in the Cook Islands Football Women’s Round Cup 2023, a victory that has not only secured their place in the league but has also solidified their status as a force to be reckoned with in the realm of women’s football.
Under the leadership of head coach Mii Piri-Savage, the team has been preparing hard to take the field with hearts full of hope and eyes gleaming with the fire of ambition.
Piri-Savage shared her thoughts on the upcoming challenges: “Heading into this tournament, we expect our team to embrace the challenges ahead with determination and unity.”
“We’ve prepared the best we can, and we anticipate our debut to be marked by competitive spirit, and a drive to achieve respectable results and earn the respect of our fellow competitors.”
The team’s journey is not just about the matches to be won but also about the legacy they will leave, she said.
Drawn into the formidable Group A, Avatiu will face their first test on March 10 against the Henderson Eels FC. The following matches on March 13 and 16 will determine their fate as they vie for a place in the semi-finals.
In a statement, Cook Islands Football Association said: “The Avatiu FC women team’s narrative is a celebration of dedication, teamwork, and the relentless pursuit of excellence.”
“As the island nation watches with bated breath, these inspirational athletes are ready to etch their names in the annals of the OFC Women’s Champions League and, more importantly, in the hearts of their compatriots.
“The Cook Islands have long been known for their pristine beauty and tranquil seas, but now, the Avatiu FC women’s team is set to showcase the indomitable spirit and soccer prowess that their homeland has fostered. As they step onto the international stage, they carry the dreams and aspirations of a nation, ready to showcase Cook Islands women’s football to the world.”
