Tourist visa to be extended
The changes which were to come into effect from June 30, 2023, are already in force from last week. It includes a new application process and steep fee increases and will affect all current permit holders and new applications for residence, work, investment, study and visit.

Visitors to the Cook Islands will be able to extend their stay for up to a year under a new regulation being finalised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Immigration (MFAI). The move has been welcomed by the country’s tourism industry.

New Zealand passport holders should be able to come and go as they please. The special relationship that the Cook Islands has with NZ is effectively a one way street without restrictions. Whereas the relationship NZ has with the Cook Islands, comes with a qualifier. That is inequitable. You can't have your cake and expect to eat it, all said and done. Cook Islanders are enriched by the relationship with NZ. When they are in the Cook Islands they are Cook Islanders. Once they clear immigration and board that plane for international travel, they become NZers. It doesn't work the same way for NZers.
