Close call for motorists as pole toppled
A power pole was toppled on Saturday following a crash near the Cook Islands Game Fishing Club. 23070222

Those involved in a motor vehicle crash at Kiikii in Rarotonga on Saturday afternoon were fortunate to escape serious injury, police say.

Emergency services were called to the scene about 4pm where a 17-year-old female driver of a car, and her young passenger, had crashed into a power pole in the vicinity of the Cook Islands Game Fishing Club bend.

The power pole was brought down across the Main Road, and a female motorcyclist traveling behind the car also crashed.

Main Road traffic was then diverted for a couple of hours while the scene was attended to by police, ambulance emergency staff, Te Aponga Uira (TAU) and T&M Heather workers.

TAU technicians temporarily propped up the overhead cable with the hydraulic bucket of a network truck, ahead of the pole being replaced.

Police confirmed the incident was not alcohol-related.

Five people were forbidden from driving by police overnight on Saturday, including three teenaged motorcyclists.

Three of the vehicles confiscated by police did not pass a registration check.
