Woman in custody following multiple contempt charges

A woman who has struggled to comply with bail conditions has been remanded in custody.

Maiarii Kauvai faces multiple contempt charges on top of burglary and fraud.

She appeared before Justice of the Peace John Whitta in court at Avarua on Wednesday.

Police said they had asked for the matter to be heard so the defendant could be remanded in custody, as she was now facing multiple charges and had lived at four residences, all of whom did not want to take her back, including an employer.

She had been in custody since Monday and had shown disregard, and was not abiding by conditions, police said.

Police said sentencing had been set down for August 23 and the charges were serious.

Police would recommend a custodial sentence.

“She is not helping herself.”

Defence lawyer Mark Short said he did not envisage dealing with the new matters.

JP Whitta said the defendant faced seven contempt charges and remanded her in custody to August 17 for call over.

Kauvai previously appeared on a contempt of court charge on July 27 when the court was told it was her sixth breach of curfew.

At the time both the defence and prosecution agreed for adjournment to August 23, 2023 for sentencing. Justice of the Peace Georgina Williams warned the defendant at her July 27 appearance she was liable for jail if she continued to offend.
