Drink-driving tourist told to pay up

A drink-driving tourist who blew nearly four times the legal limit was told to pay his fines and costs on the same day he was due to fly back to New Zealand.

Kyle Lockwood appeared in the Criminal Court charged with excess breath alcohol on Thursday.

He was due to fly out on Thursday afternoon after the Court heard he was stopped by Police on June 3 and blew 860 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.

Police said he admitted to drinking six bottles of beer.

Justice of the Peace Tangi Taoro asked him when he was leaving Rarotonga, then once he confirmed it was later in the day, JP Taoro advised him he would be required to pay fines and Court costs before he left the country.

With a starting point of a $450 fine, he received a 33 per cent discount - $350 and 12- month disqualification - and was ordered to pay $50 Court costs.
