In a thrilling finish for round one of the Cook Islands Rugby League (CIRL) 13s domestic competition, the Titikaveka Bulldogs delivered a stunning upset against the defending champions Avatiu Eels, on Friday.

The Bulldogs clocked in a score of 32 – 28, delighting their fans.

In a CIRL post-match interview, Bulldogs vice-captain Timothy Tangirere was exhilarated with their win.

“We knew coming into this game it would be a test for our guys and we expected a very tough game,” said Tangirere, “I’m proud of the effort from the boys’ right up to the 80th minute.

“We’re at a stage where we know where we are, it’s just a matter of keeping that at every game and we can’t afford to slack off.”

Avatiu Eels captain Josh Motu said they were unlucky.

“We didn’t come away with the win… it is what it is, the Bulldogs came out strong and they’re looking good this season,” said Motu.

He said they have areas they need to work on so it’s back to the drawing board for the Eels. The weekend results are: Arorangi Bears 28 vs Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles 10; Tupapa Maraerenga Panthers 68 vs Takuvaine Warriors 14; Titikaveka Bulldogs 32 vs Avatiu Eels 28. Women’s Exhibition Match Red Team – 26 vs Purple Team 22.
