Rarotonga and Atiu claimed the men’s and women’s gold medals in the Cook Islands Games rugby league 9s competition, which concluded last night at the National Stadium in Nikao.

The final day of the Cook Islands Games league 9s was nothing short of exhilarating as Rarotonga and Atiu claimed gold in the men’s and women’s divisions, respectively.

Fans were treated to intense competition, with both teams proving their dominance on the field.

In the men’s division, Rarotonga emerged victorious after a commanding 23-8 win over a determined Rakahanga side. Despite Rakahanga’s strong showing, the absence of their star fullback, Mafu Kalas, was felt throughout the game. Rarotonga’s electrifying duo, Nathan Nabou and Tama Nicholas, proved unstoppable, with their speed and strategic play resulting in most of Rarotonga’s tries. Their efforts were key in securing the win and ensuring the gold medal for their team.

Speaking after the match, Rarotonga’s vice-captain, Fale Sooialo, shared the team’s approach to the game: “We came into the game strong with a mindset of winning. We focused on our defence and made sure to use every opportunity to get across the line. In the end, it paid off.”

Rakahanga settled for the silver medal, while Mauke secured the bronze.

In the women’s division, the final between Atiu and Mitiaro was a nail-biter. Both teams displayed incredible skill and determination, but it was Atiu who ultimately claimed the gold with a narrow 22-19 victory.

Led by the formidable Stephanie Nooroa, Atiu held off a resilient Mitiaro side, which was captained by the experienced Julz Westrupp. The match was a thrilling back-and-forth battle, with both teams fighting hard for every point.

Atiu’s win was hard-earned, with Nooroa leading her team by example. Mitiaro, despite their best efforts, had to settle for silver, while Mauke once again claimed the bronze.

Aquatics also concluded yesterday. The other events held yesterday were 3x3 basketball, cycling, darts, tennis, weightlifting, squash and lawn bowls.
