The unbeaten Avatiu Nikao Eels had a close shave in week three of the Cook Islands Rugby Union Rarotonga Club 15s premier men’s competition last night.

At Raemaru Park in Arorangi, the Eels, having defeated giants Tupapa Panthers 16-13 and Arorangi Bears 12-3 in their opening matches, took on minnows Titikaveka Bulldogs.

Despite being heavy favourites, the Eels were stunned by the resurgent Bulldogs who put on a grand fight to trail 13-14 in a closely contested first half.

Both teams had opportunities in the second spell to seal the match. The Eels managed to execute some of the chances they created to win the match 26-13.

The Bulldogs lacked the finishing touches and went down fighting in a close and intense battle.

The action continues today, starting at noon with the Under 8s and Under 10s playing on half fields, followed by the U12, U14, U16, and U19 matches between the Bears and the Eels. These junior matches are essential in nurturing young talent and providing a platform for future rugby stars to shine.

At 3.30pm, the women’s match between the Bears and Panthers takes centre stage. Both teams are eager to showcase their skills and determination, making this a highly anticipated contest.

The premier men’s match at 4pm between the Bears and Panthers is the highlight of the day.

Both teams have secured one win each so far, setting the stage for a high-stakes clash.

The midfield battle will be crucial, with Bears’ Thomas Daniel and Troy Matutu going head-to-head against Panthers’ Fereti Anau and Tua Ravula. These players are expected to be pivotal in shaping the match’s outcome with their tactical plays and physicality.

Adding to the excitement, veteran goal-kicking first 5/8s, Basil Matapo for the Bears and Daniel Toa for the Panthers, might also play a decisive role. Their experience and precision in goal-kicking could very well determine the winner in a closely contested match.

CIRU developments manager Ben Koteka said: “Rugby enthusiasts will be keen to witness these captivating encounters at Arorangi Field, so come on down to Raemaru Park to witness some good footy this weekend.”
