The Bears fell to the unbeaten Tupapa Panthers 24-36 last week, a result team representative Romaric Purua anticipated.
Purua described the match as a hard, intense contest that kept fans and supporters from both sides on the edge of their seats.
“It all came down to who wanted it more, and obviously, the Panthers came out on top,” he said.
Purua said they expected the same against the Eels this afternoon.
“We may have the home ground advantage but we can’t afford to relax or lose focus when we play them.”
The Bears are calling on their supporters to come to Raemaru Park in large numbers and provide morale-boosting vocal support.
In the other premier match, the Ngatangiia Matavera Sea Eagles will face Takuvaine Warriors.
The Sea Eagles’ preparation this week has been challenging, with several players unavailable due to injuries and other commitments.
Team manager Daena Kataina said that despite these setbacks, the team remained focused and determined.
“Coach and I are incredibly grateful to our club executives for their unwavering support, especially in managing these last-minute changes and securing much-needed reinforcements to assist our team,” Kataina said.
“Even with a shortage of players, our dedication to preparation remains steadfast, regardless of the opposition we face. We are ready to give our best and represent our club with pride.”
Meanwhile, after successive losses to the Lady Bears, the Lady Panthers will be aiming for a win in the women’s competition, which enters its third week today.
Panthers player Rima Browne says they haven’t had the best start to the season due to the lack of players, as some have either moved overseas, are no longer playing or have changed clubs.
“We’ve managed to recruit a few new players and are thankful to them for joining Tupapa, however we still only have 11 players (on paper).”
According to Browne, in the first game they only played with eight players and in the second match, they managed to get 10.
The Lady Panthers are hoping to field a full team today, leaning on their experienced players to guide their new impact players.
