Cricket is a sport full of surprises and the Edgewater women’s mid week third round match between Matavera Hot IIIs and Muri 1 was no exception.

Batting first Muri scored an impressive 86 runs (Ngarangi Napa 37 no) from their 14 overs. Matavera were in hot pursuit with Amelia Moetaua causing all sorts of problems for Muri as she smashed 36 runs. The Muri bowlers were doing well, picking up consistent wickets at the other end driving the game to a cliff hanger.

With nine balls left, no wickets in hand and only needing one run for victory a touch of brilliant fielding from Muri saw captain Trainee Tinorei run out just centimetres short of her crease ending the hard fought game in a draw.

In Turangi Davana Womens 2 side were fighting it out with Turangi 1 as they set out to chase down the 86 runs set by Turangi (Ina Willy 23). Tight bowling from Ina Willy, Grace Ngarua and Margerat Tuaputa and great team fielding made it exceptionally tough work for Davana as the side fell 50 runs short.

Flying high going into the round unbeaten, the impressive Air Raro side were handed their first loss of the season by Turangi 2 (Rupe Piakura, 32 runs) as they chased Air Raro’s modest 78 (Petua Meti, 23 runs) with only one wicket down.

The Davana 2 side headed to Muri to take on Muri 2. Batting first Davana scored 69 runs (Maraeura Peyroux, 24 runs), however, Muri were equal to the challenge taking the win.

In the Edgewater Western league Tupapa made quick work of the enthusiastic Top Cops side, with Tina arresting Top Cops batting taking 3 wickets. Requiring only eight runs to win Tupapa got the total in the first over.
