While the 2008 soccer champions Nikao Sokattak thrashed Arorangi 6-1, Tupapa had a real battle on their hands when they hosted Takuvaine on Saturday.
Takuvaine had hoped to cause an upset in Tupapa but it wasn’t to be as the well organised Tupapa side came out on top to take the match 3-1.
The team’s first goal came after a number of wayward attempts at goal with Tupapa back Mii Joseph and mid fielder Roger Manuel combining to slot in the first goal of the game.
And less than a minute later, the team’s gun striker Campbell Best banged the ball into the back of the net to give the team a comfortable 2-0 lead.
Takuvaine had their own goal scoring opportunities but lacked aggression in their attack.
The majority of Takuvaine’s attempts at goal were cleared by Tupapa defenders before reaching their keeper Remmy Wearing.
Takuvaine mid fielders including 16-year-old Paraita Akama worked extremely hard to foil numerous attempts at goal by Tupapa.
The youngster played with guts and did very well keeping Tupapa striker Paavo Mustonen in check and even managed to tackle the ball away from the striker on a number of occasions.
And just before the half time hooter, Takuvaine were given a break in the form of a penalty goal.
The team’s Uruguayan import didn’t disappoint when he struck the ball well sending it past Wearing and into the back of the goal, putting the team on the score board 2-1.
In the second spell, Tupapa upped the tempo of their game but again goal attempts went astray.
Once again Takuvaine spent most of their time on the defence and only had two or three real chances at scoring.
Takuvaine lacked the fitness to keep up with Tupapa and were punished.
This time Tupapa’s goal came via Paavo Mustonen to seal Tupapa’s win 3-1.
