Upcoming social volleyball tournament

Members of the Cook Islands Volleyball Federation (CIVF) are preparing for another ten-week tournament due to begin on October 18.

The business house mixed social volleyball league will be made possible through the continuing sponsorship and support of the Bank of the Cook Islands (BCI).

Wednesday night games will be played at the Telecom Sports Arena in Nikao from 5pm.

CIVF president Hugh Graham says volleyball got off to a spiking start midway through last year with the successful Vonnias corporate mixed volleyball league which ran for 10 weeks as well as the BCI five-week open mens and womens league.

Graham says volleyball has struggled over the last few years competing with other sporting codes for local business sponsorship.

The support of the BCI in sponsoring this league is huge for us. It means we can now offer social volleyball to anyone wanting to play, and at the same time it will assist CIVF to raise the necessary funds to develop volleyball here on Rarotonga and in the outer islands.

The up-coming social volleyball league is open to everyone but a special invitation and challenge is being extended to all businesses as a means of healthy inter-business competition, allowing staff, family and friends the opportunity to interact outside the working environment.

At any point in the games three men and women must be on the court, and normal volleyball rules will apply, although some minor exceptions are included to allow for the social nature of the tournament.

Each team is guaranteed a 50-minute game each night 10 games over the 10 weeks.

The tournament will break for Christmas and the new year, resuming in mid-January.

Organisers have limited the number of teams to 18 and urge all intending teams and players to contact Graham via email (hugh_henrygraham@yahoo.com) or by calling or texting him on 52287.
