Tour de Raro cyclists battle elements

Fifty-one cyclists lined up for yesterdays TurtlesTees Tour de Raro cycle race around the island.

Top riders in the race were expected to clock 45 minutes for the round island cycle although strong winds and rain might have caused slower times than previous years.

The cycle race part of the week of triathlon activities following Saturdays Air New Zealand International Triathlon was for the first time electronically timed by Sports Timing New Zealand Ltd.

The record to beat was 42 minutes 16 seconds set by Luke Bell of Australia in 2002.

The local record is 44:38 held by Geoff Stoddart.

The open womens record is 45:44 set by Cathy McManus of NZ and the local womens record of 45:47 is held by Jennie George.
