The Titikaveka Bulls came close to an upset only to be defeated by Avatiu 15-7 in the final of the CITC Rarotonga Sevens tournament, a precursor to the Constitution Sevens on Monday.
After outrunning the Tupapa Panthers 19-17 in their semi-final, the Bulls took a slim lead into half-time before two Eels tries ensured there was to be no upset.
The victors, who were as tough in their semi-final with a 17-12 win over the Cowboys, have the in-form Sirla Pera to thank for their win, his elusive style and speed ensuring the Bulls had plenty to do on defence.
Former national Sevens representative Clive Nicholas was also instrumental in the victory. His work upfront ensured the Eels were able to stick to their team structures, which only came to the fore in the second half.
He met his match in Tesa Manu from the Bulls though, as the hardworking forward did his best to break tackles, while centre Logo Ene also had an outstanding game.
Both sides will certainly fuel the interest in the Constitution Sevens tournament when it starts next week, but for now it is Avatiu’s time to shine as the club Sevens winners.
In the other match, the Ngatangiia Dragons hammered the Takuvaine Reds 31-5 to ensure they did not finish at the bottom of the table.
