Rugby trial today

High school students interested in studying and playing rugby in New Zealand for a year are being encouraged to turn up to a trial at BCI Stadium this afternoon.

Representatives from Rangiora High School, including head boy Kori Jones, father Trevor Jones and the rugby team’s coach and trainer, will be in attendance to find a couple of students for next year’s intake.

Two students will receive a one-year scholarship at the decile-eight school.

It’s the second time this year the high school has come to Rarotonga to scout players after an earlier trial in January saw them award Jag Love and Daniel Mato with the inaugural scholarships for 2012.

The group touched down yesterday and will be meeting with Cook Islands Rugby Union (CIRU) chief executive Ben Koteka this morning.

Koteka said today’s trial is a serious opportunity for those interested in furthering their education as well as their rugby.

“They would be able to do a year down in New Zealand,” Koteka said.

“Both sport and education go together – one doesn’t count more than the other.”

Would-be triallists are being encouraged to meet at the BCI Stadium before the skills and fitness test, which will begin at 5pm.
