The South Pacific Teams Sailing regatta sets sail today in Muri with the team from Aitutaki keen to defend their 2009 championship win.

The regatta is between sailors from Aitutaki, Rarotonga, New Zealand and Australia.

Last year Aitutaki caused the upset of the sailing season when they won the annual regatta , beating five time winner Rarotonga who placed third.

There’s sure to be some thrilling action on the Muri lagoon over the next two days.

Teams racing involves teams of three Sunburst crafts carrying two crew members each over a set course there are often collisions as the races are held over a tight course.

But with the right skills and tact the races are very exciting, not only for the sailors but also for spectators. So, if you have time on your hand, get down to the Rarotonga Sailing Club in Muri and catch some close quarter sailing action.
