Intense touch rugby grand finals last week made for low scoring games that went right down to the wire at the Nikao field.

In the women’s grand finals – touch rugby veterans the Bounty Hunters had to bring in backup players after a couple of the side’s key players failed to turn up for their grand final match against the season’s big improvers Nikao Youth.

The missing Bounty Hunter players obviously left their team mates sour which was picked up by the Nikao Youth side and exploited.

Patience was the name of the game for the Nikao Youth side who agitated and irritated the Bounty Hunters.

Experienced and former nation touch rugby representative Pare Tangata lead the Nikao Youth side to a well deserved 3-1 victory against the Bounty Hunters to take out the women’s touch rugby championship title for 2012.

The men’s grand finals match between the star-studded Rebels and the northern group Rama team was a fiery one as expected and although Rama were pumped to win the match – they couldn’t overcome the experienced Rebels side who ran away with the win 3-1.

In the mixed division Rama thrashed Nikao Youth 5-1 to meet the Rebels in the grand finals after the Rebels hammered OPM 7-0.

Tables turned for team Rebels when Rama put their all into the grand final match to score two tries to Rebels nil and win the division finals.

The short season was well received by players who now look ahead to the netball and rugby seasons.
