The Air Rarotonga Athletics Championships saw a limited field of athletes, with some of the events having just one competitor. However, the athletes who did turn out put their heart and soul into their events, many of them showing that they had the skills to win in many different track and field events.
Mereina Herman powered through the under 14 200 metre sprint to take gold, while Mangaia’s Atingakau Moekapiti made the 800 metres look easy.
T he nine athletes from Aitutaki and Mangaia put in impressive performances and managed to bring home a haul of medals to take home to their islands.
After the first day of competition Rarotonga had 19 gold, four silver and three bronze; Aitutaki had taken nine gold, eight silver and two bronze medals and Mangaia had three gold, three silver.
The two-day event began on Wednesday and ended yesterday evening. Full results will appear in tomorrow’s paper.
