Police chief attacked by villagers

PORT MORESBY – Papua New Guinea’s Acting Police Commissioner Jim Andrews has condemned an attack on the Jiwaka Provincial Police Commander Superintendent Joseph Tondop.

Tondop, along with a handful of police personnel, were set upon by villagers on Monday in Jiwaka over an issue related to the death of a local man in police custody.

A police statement says Tondop was physically assaulted and a number of police vehicles badly damaged.

The Acting Commissioner has described the attack as totally unacceptable and has given the villagers until Wednesday to hand in the assailants.

Meanwhile, Andrews says that despite criticism of the force, police are taking action against rogue policemen over recent alleged police shootings.

He said there is no cover-up and all policemen who break the law will face the full force of the law.
