Father Victor Roche said the church supported the concept of the Pacific Games and wanted to see residents also supporting it and guard against anti-social activities that would reflect badly on Port Moresby.
He said that the 2015 Pacific Games in Port Moresby should not be used as a showcase for just two weeks – but create a legacy to last well after the visiting athletes have left.
“We should keep in mind that special events come and go but normal life goes on,” he said.
“The Catholic Church is also very happy with the Games and we want to support the Games. I also call upon the other churches to support the Games that are going to take place as volunteers in any other active participation in the Games,” he said.
He said it was important to keep a balance between the value of sport, sporting events and other goals of society.
He said some countries have been so keen to project a good image on the international stage that their people have been left suffering and paying bills for years afterwards.
“Let us make sure this does not happen to PNG,” he said.
“I also call upon the people of Port Moresby to keep the city clean and make Port Moresby a secured place with good hospitality not only during the two weeks of the games but also afterwards.”
