Ngakau Toa Vaka are currently leading the points in the local oe vaka mixed V6 competition but it’s still early days so Te Tupu O Te Manava and the Live Free club have plenty of time to show their true colours.

Currently oe vaka races are being run on Wednesday afternoons over 6km and Saturdays when paddlers take on the longer 10km course.

This Wednesday is race three of the mid week mixed competition from Avarua harbour.

Last Wednesday Ngakau Toa Vaka crew steered by Tupuna Amo was the winning vaka clocking 36.28 over the 6km course followed just over two minutes later by the Te Tupu O Te Manava crew steered by Sani Sosene in 38.03.

Amo again steered his crew to victory in the 10km race on Saturday finishing in 50.41 followed by the Te Tupu men in 57.23.

There were plenty of smiles from novice paddlers who found the 10km race a challenge but were thrilled to cross the finish line in good times.

If you are keen to get into oe vaka – get along to Avarua harbour for this Wednesday’s race or on Saturday and show your interest to get involved and be part of the oe vaka family and fun.

Saturday results – 1st NTV Men (Tupuna) 0:50:41, 2nd TT Men (Deno) 0:57:23, 3rd NTV Women (Vaea) 1:06:30, 4th LF Mix (Damon) 1:10:15, 5th TT Women (Lin) 1:11:16, 6th Chop Suey Mix (Papa) 1:12:22.
