The Rarotonga cricket season isn’t due to start until September but Rarotonga clubs are making loads of progress toward strengthening this year’s Computer Man and Edgewater Competitions.
To add to the string of exciting changes, the latest announcement will see the most comprehensive and technical recognition of players ability and performances yet.
The new ‘Most Valuable Player’ (MVP) system will be the first used by any International Cricket Council East Asia Pacific member.
The programme allocates points and ranks each player’s all round game performances.
The MVP system allocates points to players for their runs scored, wickets taken, runs conceded, catches and run outs and will compliment the straight top run scorers and wicket takers table currently used.
The new programme will be a fun opportunity to be able to allocate points for performances all over the field moreover Cook Islands Cricket believes that it will become a key strategic tool in evaluating a players true contribution and influence on an entire match.
Crickets President Oliver Syme expects the MVP table to provide a lot of fun and drive competitiveness.
”Cricket might seem like a tame sport, however there is plenty of competitiveness and plenty of banter on the field so I am sure players will be keeping one eye wide open on their spot on the MVP table,“ says Syme.
The top two players from both women and men’s Twenty20 competitions will receive a cricket prize pack at the end of the season.
Syme says that the programme will be run on Rarotonga and anticipates Mangaia and Aitutaki will both run the system.
”We hope to move to a national MVP system where all players from all islands are placed against each other.“
