Market day raises games funds

The drum beats of Pukapuka proved enough to reel in the crowds at yesterdays Team Cook Islands market day fundraiser.

The dance troupe was a popular attraction at the market day held at the grounds opposite the Banana Court.

Team Cook Islands manned three out of about 20 stalls present selling food, raffle tickets and t-shirts.

All funds raised will go towards the 170 athletes who will be representing the Cook Islands at the Pacific Mini games in New Caledonia from August 27 to September 10.

The day was organised in partnership with team Cook Islands and the Business Trade and Investment Board.

This is the first time the team - made up of 13 sporting codes - has fundraised as a collective.

Business Trade and Marketing manager at BTIB Melina Tuiravakai says the company wanted to give local businesses the chance to sell alongside the team.

Those who attended the market day were treated to a performance by the Pukapuka group taking part in the Te Maeva Nui celebrations as well as a golfing demonstration from gold medallist Kirk Tuaiti.

The market day not only included team Cook Island stalls but also featured vendors who participated in the three day island trade day event who had not yet sold out of products.

We are giving everyone the opportunity to sell, says Tuiravakai.

The team will be selling raffle tickets again today for $50 with its major prize of $30,000 - and will be drawn on August 13 at the Punanga Nui Market.

Go local, go green and support team Cook Islands.
