MAGS – too fast and furious

An 11-try victory to the visiting Mt Albert Grammar School first XV on Monday against the Cook Islands Country selection stamped home why they are one of New Zealand’s top three college rugby teams.

The visitors registered a commanding 63-0 score against the local selection team and gave the large crowd at Arorangi field a fantastic display of disciplined rugby.

They will no doubt duplicate this in their second match against a town under 19 selection to be played at the Avatiu field kicking off at 4.30pm.

To their credit the local boys tried hard but they were unable to contain the MAGS team who scored tries from all-over the park in this 11-try victory.

The MAGS team also included two players of Cook Islands heritage in Arorangi boy O’Neal Rongo and first 5/8 Ethan Thompson.

Best for MAGS were captain and number 8 Dillon Lam and their first 5/8 who controlled proceedings.

Best for the Country were front-rowers prop John Vano and Levi Mckinley and midfielders Basil Matapo and Ngana Nicholas.

MAGS lead at halftime by 38-0.

As a curtain raiser to this match an Under 13 Country XV played against the touring Under 13 Northcote-Birkenhead Rugby Club team.

This was a very close match played in good spirits with the local Country team winning 17-10.

Post-match all teams enjoyed a wonderful kaikai hosted by the Arorangi Rugby Club. Thank you to all who contributed to a fine day of rugby both on and off the field.
