Members of the Livefree Outrigger Club are celebrating a successful fundraising event, which has generated $1800 for their campaign to compete at this year’s Vaka Eiva international paddling festival in November.
The club organised a quiz night at the Banana Court in Avarua, which comprised 11 teams each with between four and eight members.
Teams paid $100 to register and compete for prizes donated by various businesses, as well as an auction for black pearl jewellery.
Answers to some of the quiz questions could also be purchased for $10 or $20 by teams, with all funds going to the outrigger club.
From 7pm on Thursday evening teams tackled the first of ten question rounds, each comprising ten questions.
By 11pm a winning team was announced – Asiaciti Trust with 84 correct answers.
Spot prizes included boat cruises, massages, gym memberships, and food and entertainment vouchers.
Light-hearted interludes saw participants singing, dancing, and mimicking animal noises for spot prizes.
Alcohol donated by various businesses was also given to teams at the end of the evening.
Participants were encouraged to dress in yellow and black – the Livefree club’s colours.
Most teams were corporate-based with colleagues pooling their collective knowledge.
Club secretary Mami Nikoro said the 20-odd Livefree members are thrilled with the success of the event, which was the club’s first quiz night.
“Around $1000 would have been a bonus for us.”
Nikoro said the money will be used to help the team prepare for and compete in Vaka Eiva.
The predominantly female club was established about three years ago.
All members – of which only three are male – live in Rarotonga.
On behalf of all club members Nikoro wants to thank sponsors, participants, and volunteers who made the event one of the club’s most successful fundraisers to date.
