1 August: Today will see the start of the Lionel-Virginia golf competition at Nikao.

This is a match play on handicap knockout event which is always hotly contested.

The men will start the competition this week while the vets and the ladies will start later on.

The draw has already been made so check the notice board to see who you play first.

Good luck to all golfers.

Meanwhile in the recently-completed Palm Grove tournament, Henry Puna’s sub-80 first two rounds were only just enough to protect his last round of 85 from a tough battle with Tuakana Marukore, in the junior A comp. Henry finished on 323, just one stroke ahead of Tuakana.

After leading the junior B men’s competition by nine strokes going into the last round, club captain Phil Urlich suffered from the conditions with a 13 on the 6th and an eight on the 15th.

These holes can really grab the unwary golfer in a strong wind.

This enabled his closest runner, Shane Pulis, who carded a great 80, to close the gap and they were all square on 343 after 72 holes.

Shane triumphed in the play-off and Phil had to settle for second spot.

In the junior ladies’ division Jackie Urlich’s sub-90 rounds in the second and third rounds were enough to cement the lead over Theresa Barrett.

Jackie finished on 368 ahead of Theresa on 370. - NAGA
