It’s all about enjoying sport

Traffic came to a slow crawl in Titikaveka yesterday to make way for the 53 kids who took part in the fun Kids Triathlon.

Two races were held on the day – one for the little babes and kids aged 4-8 and the second for older kids aged 9 and upwards.

And just like an adults triathlon – there was the pre race joking and small talk followed by a flurry of activity as the race got underway.

There was plenty of splashing in the lagoon for the swim leg with marshalls on hand to make sure no one got in trouble.

Then it was on to the bikes of all shapes and sizes.

Standout cyclists were definitely little Matai Washbourne (5) who is a regular with dad at the weekly triathlon and four-year-old Mia Bullivant who sped up and down the road on her pink cycle complete with training wheels. Then it was on to the run along the beach and once across the line – the kids were presented with a Sanatarium gold medal by star triathletes Vanessa Palmer and Kelly Pick.

There were also spot prizes won on the day with a $50 voucher going to Jay Ingu while Holly Washbourne was drawn as the winner of the new bicycle.

The day wasn’t about winning the triathlon but rather giving it a go and being active these school holidays.

If you missed out on the triathlon – make sure you don’t miss the next one which is being planned for the end of the year.

The triathlon association would like to thank all those parents and volunteers who made the day a fun one for the kids and a roaring success.
