Friday’s golden oldies (GO) match at Nikao started off well with senior referee Simi Teiotu in charge of the whistle.
His interpretation of the GO rules got the game flowing.
For the record, Teiotu has been selected for Sydney and will assist with refereeing there and hopefully emulate John Hosking (Brisbane) by being the voted ‘ref of the festival’.
Now for the game, June Brown in her first GO outing showed that she was up to the mark with a try and instigating another.
Skid Lid with his mini mohawk had a couple of good runs and played in the true spirit of the GO.
Spanner the independent was also in the thick of things as usual and if he gets to be an MP he will tighten a few nuts with the older MPs like Wilkie Rasmussen the dasher who thoroughly enjoyed himself.
He was closely watched by his boss the PM and Navy in Chairman Mau’s private grandstand overlooking the ground.
Taua as always was picked on by fellow Mongoose players in the opposition but as usual came smiling and he combined well with ex Kiwi John who for once wore Red shorts, good on you John.
Moe from the Titikaveka Club had an excellent game as we all do from the country when we play in town.
In fact it was a good game all round.
Then the after game function hosted by Mongoose at Roses’s in their excellent fashion as always but we have abandoned the $5 a plate and are back to just hosting the way GO do, meitaki maata Mongoose.
Next Friday’s game is at the Legends ground in Takuvaine, so please Mr Mark (another hopeful in September) Takuvaine and Mongoose supply the jerseys and you never know there may be a couple of internationals show up and play, see you all there.
