Downtown Avarua streets will turn into a multi sport arena this morning in commemoration of World Health Day.
The main road through Avarua will be closed from 9am to 2.30 in the afternoon, however the Maire Nui Drive on the beach side will remain open .
From 11am onwards a number of sports demonstrations and games will be staged along the main Avarua road.
From the start of town – tennis will be played in front of the ANZ Bank.
So if you’re going into the bank take time out to have a fun round of tennis while the queue shortens in the bank.
Further along in the CITC main store car park – a team from the Ministry of Health will be conducting health checks.
There will be a second health check booth in the shelter opposite the police station.
Also at the CITC car park – basketball hoops and soccer goals will be set up for a few rounds of mini b-ball and soccer.
Carrying on down the road, paddlers will gather in front of the Fishers Black Pearl store for the blessing of three new six-man vaka.
This will start at 12.30pm with master carver Mike Tavioni to conduct the blessing.
Afterwards paddling lessons will be available as well as a slide show of some great oe vaka moments from the Vaka Eiva Festival.
This could be your chance to get into the sport.
Test your strength at the BCI bank where the weightlifting demonstrating will be staged but don’t go overboard or you may need to back track to the health check station at CITC.
Shake your booty at Foodland where the Zumba group exercise demo is sure to get your heart pumping.
Or if need to let some steam off – Westpac Bank is the place to be where the high energy Fight-Do classes will be running.
Test your batting and bowling skills at Mana Court where the cricketers will be ready to give you some coaching lessons.
Health muesli bars will be up for grabs if you can bowl or bat to a target and who knows you might get hooked.
The touch rugby players will be showing off their fancy foot work in front of Vonnia’s Store and you have a chance to show off your skills too.
If you made a resolution to lead a healthier lifestyle in 2010 – this is your opportunity to speak to some of our sports codes and kick start your healthy year.
