TONGA – Tonga’s High Commissioner to Papua New Guinea has presented her credentials in Port Moresby during a three day visit.

Matangi Tonga reported that Princess Angelika Latufuipeka Tuku‘aho met with both PNG’s new governor-general, Bob Dadae, and the prime minister Peter O’Neill.

She also received a reaffirmation of Papua New Guinea’s commitment to assist Tonga in preparation for the Pacific Games in 2019.

PNG has committed just over US$15 million to support Tonga’s hosting of the Games, including the cost of refurbishment of Teufaiva National Stadium in Nuku‘alofa.

The Princess has diplomatic accreditation to Papua New Guinea, with an ambassadorial residence in Canberra, in addition to her duties as High Commissioner of Tonga to Australia.

Tonga and PNG have had diplomatic relations since 1980.

Princess Angelika paid tribute to the work of Tongan missionaries as early Tongan diplomats to PNG.
