The newly revived Cook Islands Volleyball Association (CIVA) held a fun one-day mixed volleyball competition at the Telecom Sports Arena on Monday.

Five enthusiastic teams registered for the competition and found out the feeling of playing the sport they love in a purpose built sport arena.

And despite the low numbers, there was plenty of action from the teams.

CIVA is gearing up for a massive tournament to start on August 6 – the Vonnia’s Corporate Mixed 6 Volleyball League and teams that took part in Monday’s tournament have certainly got an advantage over teams that will join the upcoming league but did not play on Monday.

CIVA vice president Brendon Heath, an international beach volleyball star, was once again impressive to watch with his aerial style of play.

It wasn’t long before other players began picking up tips from the lofty volleyball player who will be helping developing the sport here in the Cooks.

The two teams that were looking like the grand finals contenders was team Smashproof which included Heath and the equally talented Rukz (Rakahanga) group.

Soft Touch was also threatening through the day.

Teams played five games in the round robin competition with Smashproof emerging the overall winners with 5 wins followed by Rukz with 4 wins and Soft Touch in third place with 3 wins.

Airport flyers, Be Cool and Moana Sands placed fourth, fifth and sixth respectively.

A knockout competition then followed which saw Soft Touch pull out all their skills to win over Smashproof in second and Rukz in third place.

It was great way to spike the start of the volleyball season and the association would like to thank Moana Sands Villas, Dr Uka Surgery and Wigmore’s Super Store for their support and sponsorship of volleyball.
