Final week for sports award nominations

This is the last week for nominations of athletes for the annual sports awards to be held on May 2 at the Edgewater Resort and Spa in Arorangi.

National federations are encouraged to honour their athletes’ success through the 2011 sporting year by nominating them for one of the 18 awards up for grabs.

Members of the community are also encouraged to make nominations for the sports hall of fame.

Sports award and sports hall of fame nomination forms are available at the CISNOC office in Taputapuatea. To have an electronic copy sent to you via email, contact the office on 24095.

Sports award judges will convene a week before the awards to make their decisions on each award based on the nominations made by national federations.

A guest speaker for the event is yet to be confirmed.

The sports awards up for grabs in section A are – sportsman of the year, sportswoman of the year, junior sportsman of the year and junior sportswoman of the year.

Athletes nominated for junior sportsman and sportswoman of the year must be under 18 years of age before December 31, 2012.

In section B – the awards up for grabs are sports team of the year, sports achievement of the year, fair play award, IOC sports personality award and women in sport trophy.

Section C includes awards for sports technical official of the year, sports administrator of the year, sports coach of the year, best administrated outer island sports association of the year and best outer island sports achievement award.

The final section includes Manea Zone sportsman of the year, Manea Zone sportswoman of the year, Purapura Zone sportsman of the year and Purapura Zone sportswoman of the year.

As outer islands sports administrators will be on Rarotonga for the awards night – the Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee annual general meeting will be held on May 4 at the AOG hall in Takuvaine.

CISNOC president Sir Geoffrey Henry is currently on sick leave and CISNOC senior vice president George Paniani has taken up the role of acting chairman.

If Sir Geoffrey’s health hasn’t improved by the AGM, Paniani will also chair the meeting.
