Fiji prepares for heavy rain

FIJI – Fiji authorities say there remains a possibility of a Tropical Cyclone forming at the end of this week in Fiji waters, advising the public to re-consider plans for travel and events this weekend.

A tropical disturbance which has been hovering off Fiji for the last few days has now developed into a tropical depression.

Yestereday morning TD04F was about 220 kilometres west-south of Rotuma or about 560 kilometres north-northwest of Nadi.

The system is continuing to move towards the Fiji group.

A heavy rain alert is currently in force for the whole country, which is still reeling from Cyclone Winston in February with hundreds of people still living in tents.

Fiji’s national disaster controller, Meleti Bainimarama, said safety was paramount, and necessary preventative measures should be practiced by all Fijians.

“This time of the year bring much hype and festivity, but we are urging the public to limit travel and gatherings to only that which is necessary”, he said.

“In the past, we have had casualties with small boats out at sea after people were returning from social gatherings amidst weather warnings and alerts by authorities.”

Bainimarama added that those still living in tents are to pay close attention to advisories from authorities through the media.

“Should the need arise, district officers and government officials are on the ground and will provide necessary evacuation support”, he said.

“For those whose evacuation centres were damaged by Cyclone Winston, these communities can find out their nearest alternative evacuation centre through their district office.”

Nadi Weather Office Director, Ravin Kumar says there is still a moderate chance of the system developing into a tropical cyclone over Fiji waters.

“Over the next 24 to 48 hours we expect the Tropical Disturbance to slowly intensify. Its movement is very slow,” he said.” Heavy rain and flooding will be the major concern for now.”

Localised flash flooding is likely with the heavy rain tonight and tomorrow, while a more significant risk in the medium term towards the latter part of the week will be more widespread river flooding, especially about the west and the north.

Rain is likely to be the main hazard with this system. A strong wind warning also remains in place for the whole of the Fiji group.
