National netballer Holly Solomona has been riding an emotional rollercoaster in Delhi, India after suffering a ligament tear in her knee that has ended her Commonwealth Games campaign.

The 26-year-old mother of one tore the ligament on the inside of her knee during the Cook Islands first Commonwealth Games netball match against the Silver Ferns on Tuesday.

Solomona suffered the tournament ending injury to her left knee after landing heavily on it when receiving a lobbed ball from a team mate.

She says that as soon as she heard her knee ‘pop’ she knew that it was going to be a serious injury.

“When they took me to the sideline and the pain went from my hips to the tips of my toes – I knew it was a serious injury.”

The specialist centre, who’s been in training as a wing attack for the past week, slogged it out for five months preparing for the games.

And after the initial heartbreak of missing the remaining tournament, Solomona has quickly bounced back.

“At least I actually got to take to the court against the Silver Ferns!” says Solomona.

She says she has been told that after surgery, which she will undergo when she returns to Australia, recovery could take between seven months and a year.

But Solomona now has a new focus and goal – to recover well over the next eight months and be fit and ready for the Pacific Netball Series in PNG next year.

And with a fighting attitude like that – we are sure to see Solomona in the Cook Islands squad again.
