Golden oldies rugby players celebrated the start of Te Maeva Nui with a rugby game at Avatiu on Friday.

Despite the festive mood of the game, Taiki’s team had its work cut out by Bishop’s team stacked with ex-national players in the guise of Stephen of the Araura Hammerheads, Teariki Matenga and Rob Matapo of the Titikaveka Golden Bulls.

The forward rumble was an even contest with Taiki and Wills outstanding in open play and providing the vital link between forwards and backs.

For playing the game in the true spirit of the golden oldies, Taiki and Wills were both declared the ‘most valuable players’ of the match.

Ladies Dawn and Ake held their own against players like Taua and Lux who normally run over defenders rather than around them and speedsters Mike, Bishop and Pete.

After the game Eels stalwarts Mac Tongia and Albert Nicholas Jnr invited everyone to their clubhouse to share their umu kai.

This Friday at 5pm, the game will be played at Avatiu and the execs are inviting all the Pa Enua oldies to join them as they continue to celebrate Te Maeva Nui.
