Canteen makeover

Tereora Colleges canteen is expanding to accommodate the growing school roll.

A list of work to be done has been forwarded to members of the Avatiu/Nikao Mongoose Golden Oldies rugby club in an effort to organise a working bee.

Parents of students are also being encouraged to help if they can.

Tereora College board of trustees vice chairman Emile Kairua says the school can source all required material but helping hands are needed to implement the proposed development.

It includes the removal of half a wall, small alterations to an existing concrete wall, the movement of an existing bench, re-routing of plumbing, removal and re-wiring of a light switch, the creation of a window for food service which requires a wall to be cut and the formation of a food preparation bench.

With the increase in the school roll this year, the number of students at the college is stretching the now limited size of the canteen.

Kairua says about 650 students are now enrolled at the school.

He is also seeking a new canteen manager, as the previous manager has left.

At present two temporary staff are working in the canteen, which will eventually provide jobs for three people a manager and two assistants.

Kairua says materials for the upgrade will cost between $3000 and $4000 and be provided through the school.

Its not going to be a huge amount of work. It will probably be two nights worth and we are hoping to have it done as soon as it can be arranged.

Kairua says it is unlikely the canteen will have to be shut for the work to be completed, and disruptions will be kept to a minimum.

He says the canteen is implementing a healthy eating initiative.
