Appointing team managers is the first task assigned to national federations by the Cook Islands Sports and National Olympic Committee (CISNOC) ahead of next year’s Pacific Games in New Caledonia in August.
A housekeeping meeting was held at the CISNOC office yesterday to update national federations on what they should be doing now to prepare for the games.
CISNOC sports manager, Robert Graham, says the first up meeting is to get national federations thinking ahead in terms of preparing for the Pacific Games, scheduled to be held between August 28 and September 10.
Graham says which codes the Cook Islands will compete in is still to be confirmed and this will depend entirely on the preparedness of codes.
Twenty eight sports will be contested at the games and national federations will need to meet the CISNOC high performance selection criteria first.
This means appointing a team manager to meet one-on-one with CISNOC to update the national sports body of their particular codes readiness for the games.
Graham says that Wednesday’s meeting was also a good opportunity to remind national federations of the athlete eligibility criteria, which for the Cook Islands means that an athlete must hold a New Zealand passport and must have resided in the Cooks for a minimum of five years.
CISNOC is also asking potential games codes to begin compiling a long list of athletes and to begin gathering their personal information ready for when the New Caledonia games organising committee begins the accreditation process.
One-on-one meetings between code team managers and CISNOC are set to begin in the next couple of weeks.
