Brown bolts

Golden Oldies rugby players will lace up for their next bruising encounter this Friday at the Nikao field.

Last week, Mickey and Wills captained the two golden oldies rugby teams that played at Tupapa.

Minister Brown, fresh from the Olympics with a standing start quicker than Usain Bolt, opened the scoring after a triple cut move involving Mac, Pete and Snake.

In response the opposing backline of Andy, Bishop, Mickey and Takaiti let the ball beat the man before the final off-load to Ben, Biker T and Ake to finish off.

Man-mountain Eric, papa Pat and Duke formed some solid ruck and maul combinations that sucked in defenders creating gaps for their backs to exploit.

The rival forward pack of Anau, Moe and Wills on the other hand used the strategy of holding up the scrum long enough to provide quick ball for their backs.

While other (younger) players were taking water breaks, Wills played for the full 60 minutes which earned him the ‘most valuable player’ award.

Sharp-eyed referee Tok picked up many forward passes and the odd high tackle and illegal fends but as usual the offenders protested using many excuses to no avail.

At the Whitehouse after-match, the oldies enjoyed the company of Heiny and Steiny.

All are welcome to get your boots on, correct short colours and get to Nikao for Friday’s next big golden oldies rugby match.
