Mixed boys crew Cook Islands International tipped over in the junior under 19 open ocean race of Vaka Eiva yesterday morning.

The crew was made up of Cook Islanders, New Zealanders and Australians. They were offshore from Club Raro about 2km from the finish line in the 15km race when they were caught by a surprise wave. The boat they were in – ROC canoe number 19 – did not suffer any major damage. A single kiato snapped but the crew had a replacement and the vaka will be back on the water today.

Some members of the crew cut their feet walking on the reef and the captain received treatments for cuts at the hospital. However, they all got straight back in the water and were competing in the sprints by the afternoon.
