Records fell at the best ever attended Tereora College athletics day yesterday.
It was a festive atmosphere despite the competition as Tereora College students dressed up and cheered each other on.
House pride was on the line as students ran, jumped and threw their way to earning points for their respective houses.
Without a doubt one of the highlights of the day for all was watching Olympians Patricia Taea and Patrick Tuara rip up the BCI Stadium track.
Their blistering 100m and 200m races were met with resounding cheers and wide eyes from stunned and impressed students as they saw the two track stars leave their opponents in their dust.
As well as first place finishes and top points for their houses – the pair were gunning to break old records and set new ones in the senior category.
Other highlights of the day were the participation events with the old favourite tug-o-war a fun and entertaining event that all enjoyed.
Physical education teacher Alan Syme was stoked with the turnout of students for the day’s races and the fact that students had set goals to win races and break records, which happened.
At midday yesterday, Syme believed that five new records had already been set including a couple of new ones by Taea and some fresh faced junior athletes.
Final individual results were to be analysed last night and confirmed today.
After a day of action on the track and field – house one walked away the overall winners.
Syme and Tereora College would like to thank Athletics Cook Islands for their support and a special meitaki maata to students of the Cook Islands Sports Academy for their fabulous job in keeping times and generally supporting the day’s event.
