Baudinet with his partner Daniel Llarenas won all four of his doubles matches 6-0, but the wins did not come easy.
The Pacific Oceania team has been relegated to Asia/Oceania Zone Group IV after taking the bottom spot in its pool. “A very disappointing day today again going down 1-2 against Iran which confirms us being relegated to group 4,” said Baudinet yesterday.
“If you are in the bottom two of your pool you then go into the relegation playoff pool,” he said.
Pacific Oceania represents 16 of the Pacific islands in a single team. This is due to the fact that Pacific countries are small in comparison to the rest of the world’s teams and are therefore allowed to combine their talents to make a single team.
The countries represented in the Pacific Oceania team for this Davis Cup were from Guam, Tahiti, Fiji, and the Cook Islands.
The team was not prepared for the harsh conditions and the extreme heat and in the end that proved to be the Pacific Oceania team’s downfall.
According to Baudinet, “It was extremely difficult to compete in this intense desert heat. On the final day of matches 3 of the 4 courts all had players suffer from cramping injuries.”
Baudinet himself ended up with a strained abdominal muscle and a strained wrist which he played through in the final days.
Baudinet is in with a chance to hold an all time record for the Pacific Oceania team at the Davis Cup for most wins by a single player.
A huge victory for Baudinet personally, but an overall disappointing result for the Pacific Oceania team. “A disappointing tie for Pacific Oceania team but I must say a very happy feeling winning all my doubles, thank you for all your support. Time to rest the body.”
