Avatiu-Nikao have successfully retained the Kumete Sports trophy with a small but enthusiastic number of athletes turning out to the BCI Stadium yesterday for the annual inter village competition.
Avatiu-Nikao earned the highest points during the first event of the Queen’s Birthday sporting event – the round island cycle.
The cycle race on Saturday attracted around 10 keen riders ready to represent their villages.
Avatiu-Nikao athletes earned 75 points from placing well in the individual and teams category with Tupapa coming in second place with 20 points while Arorangi cyclists earned 15 points for their village and Matavera earned one point from their sole cyclist.
Track and field races were the go on Monday as athletes ran, threw and jumped their way to points for their respective villages.
In the end, Avatiu Nikao retained the Kumete trophy after amassing 782 points with Arorangi coming home in second place with 716 points.
Third place went to Titikaveka with 553 points followed by Tupapa with 190 points, Takuvaine with 27 and Ngatangiia-Matavera athletes earned their village 12 points.
The junior Kumete shield was won by the Tupapa junior athletes who earned 299 points for their village while Avatiu-Nikao placed second on 283 points followed by Arorangi on 272, Titikaveka on 116 points, Takuvaine on 48 and Ngatangiia-Matavera earning 12 points.
