Avatiu-Nikao looking flash in new gear

The Avatiu-Nikao Cricket club will be best dressed team on the island after receiving new uniforms donated by the Otago Cricket Association.

The Avatiu-Nikao club seized the opportunity to get their hands on a full club kit after hearing that domestic cricket in New Zealand changed major sponsors and clothing makers.

Club captain Shane Thompson approached the Otago Cricket Association to find out what they’d be doing with their old playing gear as the two clubs share the same colours of blue and gold.

“The worst thing they could say was no,” says Thompson.

The club was thrilled to hear that Otago had agreed to send them their old gear – but they never imagined that they’d receive everything the Otago club had.

Avatiu-Nikao was donated playing shirts, playing pants, tracksuits, jerseys, hats and polar fleeces.

The uniforms were blessed and tested this week when Avatiu-Nikao, the current holders of the Cookie Cup, played against their Cup challengers from Turangi.

They look forward to wearing their uniforms again this weekend against Tupapa 2 when they do battle at the Nikao field.

The Avatiu-Nikao Cricket Association would like to say a big meitaki maata to Otago Cricket for their generous donation and to the continued support of Rose and Rea Kairua and Roses Garden.
