Young legs proved to be the winning formula for the 20-strong Avatea Young Guns relay team who took out this years event in 1.53.02 on Tuesday afternoon.
The Round the Rock Relay run lived up to its reputation of being the largest participation event in the week of running programme with 360 runners and walkers taking to the roads.
The Avatea Young Guns wasted little time in running around the island with each new runner keeping up a sprinting pace for the school team, which helped them edge out the Kiwi Whakatane Sports crew who crossed the line just 4 seconds being the Young Guns in 1.53.06.
In third place overall and taking out second place in the primary school relay division was the Avarua School team who clocked a time of 1.53.36 and in third place were the JC Representatives from Imanuela Akatemia who ran around the island in 2.14.28.
The Ministry of Health proved they were no slackers when they finished 5th overall to come second in the open team division with a speedy time of 1.57.53.
Tereora College teachers clocked a great time of 2.22.16 to place 11th overall while the only secondary school team from the national college under the name of Tereora Littles crossed the finish line in 4th place overall in 1.57.23.
The sole walking team, Team Skip Edgewater, walked around the rock in 3.26.31.
Athletics Cook Islands would like to acknowledge sponsors ANZ Bank, T-shirt Factory, Cook Islands News, Turtles, Edgewater Resort and Spa, Vaima Water, Downunder Travel Canada, Patu Katu, Sepha Marsters and Keith Sepha.
A smaller but not less enthusiastic group of runners laced up again yesterday for the last event on the week of running programme the Nutters Cross Island Run.
