Thursday 16: After the week-long Cook Islands Games, Aitutaki has emerged as the overall winner of the event after winning 16 gold medals, 11 silver, 7 bronze for a total of 34 medals.
Vaka Te Au O Tonga was a close second with 12 gold medals and a total of 30 medals while Vaka Takitumu came third overall with 11 gold medals and a total of 21 medals.
The games have been a good opportunity for coaches to make selections for a train on squad to prepare for the Pacific Mini Games in September.
While the games was somewhat of a low key affair, there were some fantastic competitions including the boxing fight night last week when female police officers were in the spotlight.
There were also some great bouts seen in the junior men and open men’s category with boxers showing signs of improvement since the last fight night a month ago.
The games wrapped up on Saturday with a small closing ceremony at the auditorium. - Matariki Wilson
