With each tennis competition there is a marked improvement in the skills of junior tennis players and the start of the ANZ Stars tennis on Saturday saw some fantastic match-ups at the Nikao tennis centre.

Beginner tennis players under 8 got the competition off to an ace start with mini tennis games set up to assess the skills of the young players.

The under 8 competition was followed by the under 13 tournament which saw around 14 up-and-coming tennis stars battle it out on the courts.

Little nerves were seen dur-ing the draw process, and with each two opponents called out there was a rush of excitement as the tennis stars took to the courts for warm-ups before playing six sets to determine the winner.

Each winner progressed to the next round with Strauss Williams and Andrew Terupe facing off in the under 13 finals.

In the end, Williams emerged as the winner of the tournament although everyone that took to the courts showed great tennis skills and this will ensure continued strong representation of the code in Team Cook Islands to future games.

The ANZ Stars tennis competition continues next Saturday at the Nikao tennis courts.
