7s qualify for Hong Kong

The Cook Islands national sevens rugby team has qualified for the Hong Kong leg of the HSBC Sevens Series.

The Cook Islands finished fourth overall at the Oceania Men’s Sevens Championships in Sydney over the weekend.

The Cooks placed third in their pool after beating PNG 24-12, losing 26-24 to Samoa and thrashing Tahiti 66-0 on day one.

On day two the Cooks got their campaign back on track when they beat American Samoa 19-0 before going down to Samoa 52-5.

The Cooks faced Tonga in the third and fourth place payoff and were edged out by their Tonga cousins 19-17 for Tonga to place third.

Samoa and Australia played the grand final of the tournament with Australia coming out on top 12-7 to be crowned the tournament championships.

Along with Samoa, Australia has qualified for the Rugby World Cup sevens 2013 qualifier.
