Plant a tree and offset carbon emissions and help stabilise the coastline.

This year, the National Environment Service, in conjunction with Vaka Eiva, will team up with the Muri Environment Care Group and the Muri community and landowners for the annual tree planting ceremony.

To date, NES and Vaka Eiva paddlers have planted over 50 trees – mostly canoe building trees such as Tamanu and Miro.

This year, junior paddlers will lead the tree planting ceremony planned to be held on Tuesday 23 October at Muri.

This is a rest day for senior paddlers who are welcome to join the tree planting project.

This year, ironwood or Toa trees will be planted along the stream at Nukupure Park in Muri and along the coastline of the famous Muri beach and lagoon.

The trees along the stream and beach will not only stabilise the land from erosion but provide shade for all the supporters of sport that are held at Muri.

In total, 20 new Toa trees will be planted in Muri.

Planting trees is also a good environment gesture as it means giving back to Mother Nature and being good environment stewards.

The Muri community will assist in maintaining the trees planted at Nukupure Park.

But this doesn’t mean that this is the only time and place you can plant a tree while you are here on Rarotonga.
