12 records fall at Tereora

A whopping 12 new track and field records were set on Wednesday during the annual Tereora College inter house athletics competition at the BCI Stadium.

Angelus Vaevaemaki set a new 100m sprint time in the junior boys division with a time of 11.56sec – breaking the previous record set in 1987 by A. Rua with a time of 11.98sec.

Malik Crawley set three new records in the junior boys division after clocking a time of 24.59sec in the 200m sprints and 58.10sec in the 400m.

The previous 400m record of 59.20sec was set in 1974 by T. Tongia.

Crawley’s third new record was set in the junior boys high jump event where he jumped 1.69m with the old record being 1.68m set by R. Heather in 1998.

The other new record set in the junior boys division was in the shot put event with Gordon Teatai throwing a massive 13.24m to smash the old record of 12.39m set by K. Teiti in 2008.

Myria Rongo was the only junior girl to set a new record on Wednesday when she threw her discuss to 26.54m and smashing the old record of 25.50m set in 1973 by M. Tuiate.

Olympic sprinter Patricia Taea set three new records on Wednesday.

She improved on her 2011 200m time of 26.94sec by clocking 25.97sec and on the field she also improved on her javelin throw from 2011 where she threw 33.32m by throwing a new distance of 33.52m.

In the jumping pit – Taea flew to the 5.09m mark to just edge out the old record of 5.08m set in 1987 by E. Tierney.

Three new records were also set in the relay race where Te Kou house set a new time of 50.69sec in the junior boys division shaving off .9 seconds off the previous record set by Maungaroa house last year.

Maungaroa house set a new relay record in the senior boys division clocking at time of 49.03sec while the Te Kou senior girls broke the 1990 record of 58.28sec set by Ikurangi by clocking a time of 58.06sec on Wednesday.

The overall winner of the colourful and fun day of sports went to house one with a total of 292 points followed in second place by house three on 278 points.

House two athletes amassed 239 points to take our third place while the green machines in house four earned a total of 217 points.

The 2012 record breaking benchmark has been set for the college and with the pool of talented athletes attending the school – predictions are the new records set this year will be broken next year as local athletes continue to improve their track and field skills and techniques.
