Love is the answer

Saturday 28 June 2014 | Published in Virtues in Paradise

Whatever the question is, love is the answer. Why are we here? To love and to serve – to express love in the way we live, the way we worship, the work we do, the relationships we nurture. Here in paradise, the love of God, of family, and community are vibrant threads woven into the culture.

Let science be the decider

Saturday 28 June 2014 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, In response to Rod Grout’s letter, I have understood that the Cook Islands has wanted to realize its fisheries potential and, in isolation, it is a lucrative interest. There has been a view put forth that this issue is best looked at on a regional basis and I agree. It has been proven that fish stocks globally have declined and will continue to do so if further restrictions are not put in place.

Kids were fully aware of role

Saturday 28 June 2014 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, JW's comments in your editorial on the 24 June 2014 noting that the kids in the Demo advert have been exploited is wrong and demeaning for not only our children but all the children and youth of the Cook Islands.

CIP proud of pensions record

Saturday 28 June 2014 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, The recent attempts to cloud the pension tax issue by some in the community is nothing more than an attempt to muddy the waters on the significant gains the Cook Islands Party has delivered to our pensioners.

Govt working on 'Lost Tribe' issue

Friday 27 June 2014 | Published in Letters to the Editor

Dear Editor, The pertinent qualifying criteria for the Lost Tribe members to qualify to collect the NZ pension requires a person to have spent five of those 20 years in New Zealand after the age of 50 years. That is what is preventing the Lost Tribe from qualifying. And this is what is driving a number of people over the age of 50 to move to NZ so they can qualify for this particular criteria.

Smokies: Pot of Gold

Friday 27 June 2014 | Published in Smoke Signals

A keen reader sent in two photos of a double rainbow photographed in Avarua saying, “Who says the pot of gold isn’t at the Ministry of Finance and Economic Management? Or is it New Zealand High Commission … looks like it’s in the taro patch in Takuvaine. SS: On closer inspection of the image – the pot of gold may actually be at the Chinese CCECC compound behind MFEM!

Smokies: More kids on TV

Thursday 26 June 2014 | Published in Smoke Signals

My 10-year-old daughter knows nothing about politics let alone worrying about her future. It’s just cartoons and snacks she is worried about. Come on adults, leave our children out of this political points scoring bull in regards to a TV ad that is an attack on the other party. We all know they memorised their lines. And the guy that came on TV to defend it was clearly not a smart fellow. Freedom of speech? Our generation has a saying: “You’re an egg!”
